The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has advocated compulsory testing for drugs for governors, ministers and other political and traditional office holders.
The traditional ruler said this would help to curb hypocrisy in the war on drugs abuse in the society.
He added that anyone found wanting should be prevented from holding traditional and political leadership positions in the country.
Emir Sanusi made this known at a Senate roundtable on drug abuse in Kano on Monday.
He added that it was hypocritical for leaders to be campaigning against drug abuse while their “bodyguards and thugs” used it freely and without consequence.
The traditional ruler said, “I suggest that ministers, governors and traditional rulers should go for drug test because when youths understand that they cannot be governors, ministers or senators if they are drug addicts, they will be into their senses.”
He added, “I am ready to submit myself for the drug test.
“The country is facing a great danger because the fight against drug abuse has to be taken seriously if we are to succeed.
“We are deceiving ourselves if we don’t believe that we are part of the problem.
“Today, it is better to be a drug baron on the payroll of a political leader than to be a legally recognised security man, which means we must clean our acts before trying to achieve anything.”
Sanusi equally called for the establishment of modern drug rehabilitation facilities across the country to help drug abusers.
