PENGASSAN Suspends Nationwide Strike

In a move likely to ease the fuel scarcity problem in the country, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has suspended its one-day old nationwide strike in the country.

The union had embarked on the indefinite strike to protest alleged anti-worker practices by the management of Neconde Energy Limited.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu had intervened before the commencement of the strike but failed to broker peace between both parties.

The Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige had also appealed to the union to shelve the strike.

However, while addressing journalists on Monday afternoon, National President of the union, Francis Olabode Johnson said that the union and Neconde management had arrived at an amicable resolution of the impasse.

Johnson added that the details of the resolution were however subject to review after three months to determine the company’s compliance to agreed terms.

He disclosed that the company had unconditionally agreed to recall sacked staff and allow union activities.

The union boss further disclosed that the decision to suspend the strike was in respect of intervention, resolution reached and spirit of Yuletide.

He said workers have been asked to resume at their duty posts.

He added that other indigenous companies engaging in anti-union practices will be checked.
