Police apprehend teachers, pool staff over the death of a 5-year-old pupil during a swimming lesson

The Lagos State Police Command, on Friday, May 20, arrested some staff of the Redeemers Nursery and Primary School in Ogba region of the state, in connection with the death of Chidera Eze, one of the school’s students.

Chidera was said to have drowned during a swimming lesson organised by the school at the Ivory Health Club in the Ikeja axis of the state.

During the training, the five-year-old pupil and his colleagues were believed to be playing near the pool when he slipped into it, according to reports.

While speaking about the issue on Friday, Lagos state police PRO, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that some staff of the school have been apprehended alongside workers at the wellness centre where the drowning occurred.

“Some teachers were arrested. Some staff of the wellness centre was arrested. For now, I can’t say much until I have updates,” the police spokesperson said.

Anthony, the pupil’s father, had earlier stated that the school’s teachers neglected his son, resulting in his death, The Cable reports.

“While the incident happened, none of the teachers, caregivers, and lifeguards took notice of what was happening,” he said.

“My son was under the water for over 30 minutes, and we were all shouting as we watched the video clip.

“Another pupil also fell into the water, but her colleagues raised the alarm and they pulled her out yet while this was going on, nobody noticed my son was inside the water.”

It was gathered that the school has been shut following the incident, as confirmed by a security guard who stated that there hasn’t been any activity in the school since Monday, May 15, when the tragedy struck.
