Zamfara: Matawalle’s Deputy, Mahdi Aliyu faces impeachment

Governor Bello Matawalle’s Deputy, Mahdi Aliyu faces impeachment by the Zamfara House of Assembly. Director of Press Affairs and Public Relations, Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura announced the commencement of proceedings.

The spokesman disclosed that Deputy Speaker, Musa Bawa, presented the impeachment notice on Friday. Bawa, the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, notified Speaker, Nasiru Magarya of the moves during plenary.

“The Deputy Speaker accused the Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau of alleged constitutional breaches, abuse of office and financial misappropriation”, Jafaru-Kaura noted.

Bawa referred to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution which empowers lawmakers to carry out an impeachment.

Magarya in his response said the assembly would probe the allegations against Aliyu and act in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.

Matawalle, elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.

But Aliyu refused to dump the PDP, a decision that pitched him against the governor, supporters and ruling party.

The 33-year-old son of retired General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, a former Defence Minister, is the youngest Deputy Governor in Nigeria.
