Shehu Sani rejects election result

The lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District and candidate of the People’s Redemption Party, Shehu Sani, has demanded the cancellation of Saturday’s election in Kaduna State.

The senator lost his bid to return to the red chamber to the All Progressives Party’s Uba Sani.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Monday, the lawmaker, who claimed irregularities characterised the poll, alleged that the ruling APC bought 90 per cent of their votes.

Sani, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, said the PRP officials who monitored the elections in the state told him that the APC rigged the polls.

He alleged that the state government replaced the ad hoc workers trained by the INEC to supervise the poll, with APC supporters.

He said his party had forwarded its preliminary complaint to INEC stating why the results of the election should be cancelled.

Sani also hinted that his party might seek legal redress on the outcome of the poll.

He said, “As a gentle and also as one with a background as an activist, it was supposed to be a situation where if you were not favoured by the electorate and it was free and fair, you supposed to be a good sportsman, but you cannot be a sportsman in an arena of fraud, particularly in this Kaduna State.

“There are issues that require the attention of INEC to ensure that the aspirations and hopes of Nigerians are not dashed by the conduct of some of its officials and also by the conduct of government officials.

“The positive side is that we must appreciate the level of security in the state. Violence and thuggery that were expected never happened.

“This must have been as a result of the input of the commissioner of police and other security agencies.

“But we are particularly concerned about some fundamental issues that seriously undermined the integrity and credibility of the National Assembly election.”
