INEC sacks 2 staff, retires officer over Gov Bello’s double registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sacked two of its staff while an electoral officer was compulsorily retired for aiding double registration by Kogi State governor.

Governor Yahaya Bello was earlier in the year accused of double registration before his election as governor. INEC, in a statement yesterday by Mrs. May Agbmuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, who is also member of Information and Voter Education Committee, said the panel set up by the Commission found the affected officers culpable.

It, however, noted that while the governor currently enjoys immunity from prosecution, the affected INEC officers were punished for acts of gross misconduct. “The initial report submitted by the panel was referred to the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee, which made recommendations to the Commission,” the statement added.

The statement further added that it has applied for the Certified True Copy of the judgement by Federal High Abuja on De-cember 13, which ordered the immediate swearingin of Obiora Okonkwo as senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District. INEC has also fixed January next year for a by-election into the central zone. The Commission has announced the registration of 21 political parties to bring the number of political parties in the country to 67.
