Senate swears in Uchendu, replaces Sekibo

The Senate on Wednesday swore in Andrew Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress as lawmaker representing Rivers East Senatorial District, following the sacking of George Sekibo by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on August 24, 2017.

Uchendu, who dressed in traditional Niger Delta attire, was accompanied by his family and friends who besieged the gallery of the Senate chamber to witness the ceremony.

The new senator however left the session before it was concluded.

The appellate court had upheld the judgement of the Rivers State National and State Elections Petitions Tribunal, which sacked the Peoples Democratic Party senator.

The tribunal had in its judgement delivered on June 29, 2017, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Sekibo and directed that a fresh one be issued to Uchendu of the APC as the duly elected senator for Rivers-East.
