Man shot, killed after kicking down door at wrong apartment

The suspect in a north side break-in was shot and killed Thursday evening.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a man defending his family shot and killed a man who broke into their northeast side apartment.

The incident happened just before midnight Thursday evening at an apartment complex on Wiebeck Court near 56th Street and I-465. Police initially responded to the area for a burglary. However, on their way to the scene they learned that someone might have been shot.

After arriving on scene, officers found a 34-year-old man who had been shot and killed and a family of four – a man, woman and two small children – coming out of the apartment.

Police say the suspect, a male, broke into the apartment when he was shot by the man living in the apartment. Several shots were fired at the intruder, but no one else inside the apartment was injured.

Police say the man who was shot and killed mistakenly knocked on the wrong door, thinking it to be the apartment of his children’s mother. The residents in the door told the 34-year-old he had the wrong address. However, the man proceeded to kick in the door, demanding entry.

After gaining entry into the residence, the man then charged the male resident, who was armed at the time. It was at this time that the man fired his gun, striking the 34-year-old man several times. Following the deadly shooting, a call to 911 was made.

Police say the mother of the deceased’s children lived in another building. IMPD says on Sept. 2 there were two runs to the address of that address, but that the man was gone before officers arrived on scene.

The name or identity of the suspect is not yet known.

The deadly incident remains under investigation.
