Man charged for allegedly stealing Etisalat’s backup batteries

A 40-year-old man, ThankGod Uriri, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of backup batteries valued N800,000 belonging to Etisalat Telecommunications Nigeria Limited.

The News Agency Nigeria (NAN) reports that Etisalat uses the batteries to power its facility.

The defendant, who was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on stealing, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Mary Ajiteru, said that the defendant committed the offences with others now at large on Feb. 10.

“The defendant with his accomplices did steal 16 industrial backup batteries valued at N800,000.

Ajiteru said that the offence contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The Magistrate, Bola Olagbegi-Adelabu, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
He said that the sureties must show evidence of tax payments, and adjourned the case till May 5 for mention.
