An Igando Customary Court yesterday dissolved a 22-year-old marriage between a Customs officer, Mr. Rasheed Abiola, and his 42-year-old wife, Fatimot. Rasheed (47), according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), had approached the court to dissolve the marriage because his wife refused to abide by his instructions to stop wearing trousers. Delivering the judgement, President of the court, Lagos, Mr. Akin Akinniyi, said that it appeared that the estranged couple were tired of the marriage and all efforts to reconcile both parties had failed.
He said: “Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.
The court pronounced the marriage between Mr. Rasheed Abiola and Mrs. Fatimot Abiola dissolved; both parties henceforth cease to be husband and wife. Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrance and molestation.”
Rasheed had earlier told the court that his wife was wearing trousers and he had warned her several times to stop, but she refused. He said: “My mother and I had warned Fatimot several times to stop wearing trousers, but she wouldn’t listen. I can no longer cope with her way of life and her deviant attitude.”
