Mass sack: NUT gives El-Rufai 14-day ultimatum, threatens strike

The Kaduna state chapter of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has issued Governor Nasir El-Rufai a two-week ultimatum to rescind his decision to sack over 21,000 teachers who were said to have failed the recent competency test conducted for primary school teachers or it will commence on an indefinite strike action.

The notice served via a letter to the governor takes effect from today November 6 – 23, 2017.

The Assistant Secretary General of the union, Comrade Adamu Ango who signed the letter, said that at the expiration of the ultimatum, the union would be left with no option than to embark on an industrial action in compliance with the wishes of its members expressed at the meeting of the state executive council which held on November 6, 2017.

“It was agreed by all stakeholders in the educational sector that the pass mark for the competency test be pegged at 60 percent while those who are unable to score up to 60 percent be retrained.

“However, in a classical display of bad faith which started as a rumour, the Kaduna state government unilaterally and arbitrarily pegged the pass mark for the test at an unprecedented 75 percent.”

It would be recalled that the Kaduna State Universal Education Board (SUBEB) on Sunday released the names of 11,220 teachers who passed the competency test conducted by the state government.
