Woman bags 7-months in jail for diverting sales proceeds to boy friend

A Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 33 year-old sales girl, Tine Joy, to seven months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and diversion of sales’ proceeds to boy friend.

The Judge, Mr. Hassan Ishaq, in sentencing the defendant, however, gave her an option to pay N18, 000 as fine.

Ishaq also ordered the convict to pay the complainant, N62, 000 as compensation. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr. Ashasim Helen, told the Court that the defendant was arraigned for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation punishable under sections 314, 322 and 309 of the Penal code.

Helen alleged that the complainant, Godwin Ola, of Army Estate, Kurudu in Abuja, on July 14, reported the matter at Karu Police Station.

Helen alleged that the complainant had sometime in May, employed the defendant, as a sales girl in his garment shop situated in Karu. She told the court that the defendant defied her employer’s instruction of daily record keeping and remittance of all sales proceeds to him at close of work.

The prosecutor told the court that on July 7, the defendant refused to remit the sales of proceeds to the complainant at the close of work as she converted the sum of N62, 000 to personal use.

Helen told the court that all efforts by the complainant to recover his money from the defendant proved abortive until she was arrested by the Police.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant confessed during Police investigations to have given the money to her boyfriend, one Noah Solomon, now at large.

When her plea was taken, Joy pleaded guilty and begged the Court to temper justice with mercy and give her time to pay back the money.
