Gambia: Jammeh Deadline Pushed Back; As Mauritanian, Guinean Presidents Arrive

The deadline for Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh to relinquish power has now passed.

But Reuters news agency says ECOWAS Regional West African forces will wait for talks between Jammeh and the Mauritanian and Guinean presidents, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and Alpha Conde to take place before resuming their military operation.

The Mauritanian Airlines plane used by the presidents has now landed at Banjul International Airport; although according to reports Jammeh was not at the airport to receive them.

Gambian journalist Saikou Jammeh has tweeted not too long ago that the ECOWAS mediators had completed airport niceties and are heading for State House to meet the long-time ruler of Gambia, who has stubbornly refused to hand over to Adama Barrow who won last month’s election.

Meanwhile, Jammeh’s photo has been replaced by that of the internationally recognised President Barrow at the country’s mission in the UN in New York, reports the BBC.
