Clinton concedes defeat

Democratic party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has congratulated his Republican rival Donald Trump for winning the election.

Clinton spoke to Trump on the telephone early morning of Wednesday to congratulate him as the 45th elected president of the United States of America.

Trump won the US presidential election in a stunning victory that confounded pollsters and Clinton’s supporters.

The Republican took the key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio early this morning, as he marched towards the White House.

Many Clinton’s supporters wept openly when it was apparent that their candidate had surprisingly lost the race.

Trump won in key states, including Indiana and Kentucky, with 11 and 8 electoral votes, respectively while rival Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has won in Vermont, with three electoral votes.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the U.S. reports that the results came in through exit polls, a system whereby voters leaving polling centres are asked how they voted.

He won in more than 30 states with higher number of electoral votes defeat Clinton.

Donald Trump will become the 45th US president after a stunning victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The Republican nominee’s projected victory came down to a handful of key swing states, despite months of polling that favoured Mrs Clinton.

The battlegrounds of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina cleared the way for his Brexit-style upset.

Global markets plummeted, with the Dow set to open 800 points down.

Mr Trump’s projected victory in Wisconsin put him over the 270 out of 538 electoral college votes needed to win the White House.

The US president-elect took to the stage at his victory rally in New York and said: “I just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us on our victory.”

“It is time for us to come together as one united people.”
