Economic Crunch: Okorocha Has Vindicated Us, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, on Tuesday evening said, Monday’s admittance by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) accepted responsibility for Nigeria’s he current economic woes vindicates its earlier stance.

The PDP, in a statement by Prince Dayo Adeyeye, its National Publicity Secretary, said Okorocha’s confession to newsmen after a meeting of the APC Governors with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, “vindicated our earlier position that the Buhari Administration is clueless and lack focus in providing governance to Nigerians.”

Okorocha, chairman of the APC’s Progressive Governors’ Forum, had said: “we must take responsibility and we must never shift the responsibility to anybody. We are responsible for everything happening in Nigeria. The good, the bad, the ugly but we are promising Nigerians that we shall fix it.”

This declaration, the PDP said, “coming after several months of bulk-passing and shifting responsibilities to previous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration, has shown that the APC Government has no solution to all the myriad of problems they created since assuming office in 2015.”

In like manner, the opposition urged the ruling party to “accept responsibility for deceiving Nigerians and the world at large that previous PDP Administration achieved nothing in the economy, infrastructure and policies in 16 years.

“We hope that the recent acceptance by the Party for the economic downturn in the Country was not as a result of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) affirmation that Nigeria’s economy is the largest in Africa based on previous achievements of the past PDP led Administration. For the umpteenth time, let us re-iterate that the PDP’s achievements cannot be wished away. We therefore appreciate the APC’s acceptance and we urge them to accept all other responsibilities for all the wrongs they have plunged the Country into and equally apologize for their serial lies,” the party added.

The statement further urged the Buhari administration to declare a state of emergency on the economy and invite competent hands to help manage and revive Nigeria’s ailing and comatose economy.
