Nigeria lacks gas to generate 7,000MW power – Osinbajo

Nigeria currently generates around 3,659 megawatts, according to power generation report obtained from the Nigeria System Operator.

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo says constraints in gas supply means around around 3,132 megawatts (MW) of electricity cannot be added to the current generation capacity.

Osibanjo said it was still an irony that Nigeria does not have sufficient gas to fire its power plants up to 7000MW despite the country’s reported huge deposit of natural gas reserves which places her ninth in the league of countries with large gas reserves in the world.

Nigeria currently generates around 3,659 megawatts, according to power generation report obtained from the Nigeria System Operator.

But there are plans by the government to raise generation up to 7000MW of available capacity.

Speaking at the 9th annual conference of the Nigerian Association of Energy Economics (NAEE) in Abuja, the Vice President said, “the reported gas constraint to electricity generation as at April 23, 2016 alone was about 3,132MW.”

Osinbajo, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant (Power and Privatisation), Chiedu Ugbo, stated that the situation has largely remained as it is because there had been no investment in gas gathering and processing facilities for domestic consumption especially for the power plants.
