Real Madrid has released a statement confirming striker Karim Benzema has tested positive for COVID-19.
The 33-year-old only returned to training on Thursday after a break following France’s shock elimination by Switzerland at the European Championships.
He will now have to self-isolate.
Benzema will be able to return to pre-season training with his club teammates once he tests negative. The club has given no indication of whether the player has symptoms or is asymptomatic.
The statement, short and to the point, simply read: “Real Madrid C. F. confirm that our player Karim Benzema has tested positive for COVID-19.”
