According to Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, the Nigerian government places more importance on the wellbeing of dogs than it does on the more than 80,000 inmates housed in correctional facilities.
This was said by Oshiomhole during a lecture in public with the theme “Nigeria Yesterday, Today, and a Prosperous Future.”
He maintained that the purpose of penal facilities was to correct wrongdoers, not to murder people.
The law states that a person is presumed innocent until and until proven guilty, thus the senator bemoaned the fact that half of those incarcerated are genuinely awaiting trial.
He said, “We even take better care of dogs than we do of Nigerian prisoners.” The bad news is that half of the 80,000 inmates are incarcerated pending trial.
