The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife has announced that the driver who recklessly killed a final student of the institution has been handed over to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.
The information was contained in a press statement by the institution’s management and made available by the university spokesperson, Olarewaju Abiodun in reaction to the death of Esu Rita Ema, a final year student of Foreign Language Department.
News360 Info gathered that Esu was knocked down on Thursday afternoon while attempting to cross the Ife-Ibadan expressway on her way to submit her project to her supervisor.
Abiodun in the statement obtained by DAILY POST said Esu was killed by a reckless driver, Lasisi Sodiq Segun who was driving a Lexus car, with Abuja registration number: ABJ427LQ.
The statement said, “the body was recovered by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and deposited at the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, OAUTHC, at about 12:35pm.
The driver has been arrested by the Nigeria Police for investigation and necessary action.”
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has sent a condolence message to the parents of the deceased through the Dean, Students Affairs, Professor Adeolu Odedire.
Professor Bamire, who was visibly devastated said: “If it is very sad to lose a domestic animal, how can anyone quantify the loss of a child, most especially a grown up child who was a young, promising adult with a lot of potential. A final year student for that matter.”
He appealed to the parents, siblings, family, friends and classmates to take solace in God, adding that “the Lord will give us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
