Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president in the 2023 election, has stated that he agrees with the Supreme Court’s ruling granting local government councils across Nigeria financial independence.
As previously reported, the supreme court declared that state governors cannot legally withhold money intended for local government administrations.
Justice Emmanuel Agim’s historic ruling highlighted how this practice, which has continued for more than 20 years, violates local governments’ rights to financial autonomy.
