The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced immediate employment for some of its first-class graduates.
The announcement was made by vice chancellor, Prof Offiong Efangha Offiong, at the 38th convocation ceremony on Friday in Calabar.
According to Prof Offiong, the decision to recognise the exceptional performance of these graduates.
“I am pleased to announce that this administration will offer immediate employment to first class graduates in critical areas of need within the University,” he maintained.
The VC said that the employment opportunity is aimed at retaining and nurturing the university’s brightest minds.
He described the beneficiaries as “outstanding individuals whose academic excellence has set them apart.”
Out of the 52 first-class graduates, some were offered immediate employment, though the exact number wasn’t disclosed.
The VC urged other students to work hard for a similar opportunity.
Addressing the graduates, Prof Offiong said, “Your success is a testament to resilience, discipline, and intellectual commitment.
“You have endured challenges, adapted to changing circumstances, and emerged victorious.”
He added that they carry “not just certificates, but the responsibility to contribute meaningfully to society.”
The pro-chancellor, DIG Udom Ekpo Udom (rtd), who also spoke at the ceremony, urged graduands to uphold the values instilled by the institution and be worthy ambassadors.
He appreciated the payment of Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for January to March 2026 stressing that payment of arrears to adjunct and part-time lecturers was also commended, showing “a sense of fairness and recognition of their contributions.
UNICAL chancellor, His Highness, Alhaji Ado Bayero, assured the university community of the council’s continued commitment, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, government agencies, and partners to support efforts aimed at repositioning the institution as a leading centre of excellence in Nigeria and beyond.
