Ukraine war: Trump warns of devastating penalties for Russia if peace talks fail

United States President Donald Trump has warned that penalties for Russia could be “devastating” if it continues the war with Ukraine.

Trump spoke to reporters on Wednesday while addressing the media alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office.

“There are things you can do that wouldn’t be pleasant in a financial sense. I can do things financially,” Trump said.

“It would be very bad for Russia. I don’t want to do that, because I want to get peace.”

Trump added that those “financial things” could be “devastating” for Moscow.

“We are getting close to maybe getting something [on Ukraine] done.

“I had somebody [Zelenskyy] that didn’t seem to want peace. Now he has agreed to peace.”

This comes after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted that the ball is now in Russia’s court amid the ongoing war with Ukraine.

According to Rubio, Ukraine is now ready to stop shooting and start talking in a bid to strike a peace deal and end the war with Russia.
