The lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial district at the National Assembly, Peter Nwaoboshi, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for money laundering.
It has been reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed the latest development in a statement via its website on Wednesday.
Recall that the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal on the 1st of July, 2022 sentenced Senator Nwaoboshi to seven years imprisonment for money laundering.
But the lawmaker who was not present in court at the time of the ruling went underground and refused to present himself to the Nigerian Correctional Service.
However, the lawmaker was intercepted by operatives of the EFCC at a Hospital in Lagos on Monday, February 6, 2023.
Senator Nwaoboshi was remanded in Ikoyi Custodial Centre on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, to commence his prison term.
Supreme Court Fast-Track Senator Nwaoboshi Jail Appeal
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had in January granted a reprieve to the lawmaker representing by reversing the hearing date in the appeal challenging his seven years imprisonment for corruption.
The lawmaker had filed an appeal against the court ruling which was slated for November 24, 2024.
However, the Supreme Court on Thursday rescheduled the date for February 9, 2023, following an application filed by the lawmaker’s counsel.
Nwaoboshi through his counsel, Kanu Agabi SAN had appealed to the Supreme Court to fast-track the hearing of his case against his imprisonment.
