The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reiterated that the unregulated use of social media and other digital platforms is posing a great challenge globally.
Mohammed, who said this at the Global Media and Information Literacy Week held in Abuja today, noted that world leaders are contending with the identification of what information is true or false on these social media platforms.
Mohammed noted that the theme of this year’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week, tagged “Nurturing Trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative,” is not only apt but also timely.
According to him, there is an urgent need for people to be equipped with the ability to critically evaluate and wisely use the information at their disposal.
“As I ponder on the state of our world, and the enormous challenge it faces, especially with the unregulated use of social media and other digital platforms, I see the urgent need for every person to be equipped with the ability to critically evaluate and wisely use the information at their disposal,” he said.
The Minister for Information and Culture, however, said he was positive that the suggestions and contributions of participants from 193 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultura (UNESCO) member countries would be useful in proferring solutions to the challenges posed by unregulated use of social media and other online platforms.
“Contributions and questions will all be geared toward finding the linkages to building trust among our societies and individuals, through the use of media and Information literacy.
I am optimistic that, starting from the parallel sessions which commence immediately to the last plenary session on Friday morning, contributions and questions will all be geared toward finding the linkages to building trust among our societies and individuals through the use of media and Information literacy.
As I urge you all to give this your best attention, knowing that the world awaits the outcome of this Global MIL Week, I warmly welcome you to Nigeria. I encourage you all to discover Abuja and enjoy your stay,” the minister added.
