Owo Massacre: Ondo State Cancels Democracy Day Celebration

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has cancelled this year’s June 12 celebration in the South West state.
In a series of tweets on his Twitter handle on Saturday, Akeredolu said the cancellation was in honour of the victims of the terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, on Sunday.

The governor said the state will not be celebrating this year’s Democracy Day rather the people of the state would continue to mourn the deceased.

“In honour of the victims of the terror attack at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the Ondo State Government has cancelled this year’s June 12 celebration.

“The cancellation is to enable the people of Ondo State to mourn their loved ones who lost their lives in the horrific attack,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate and renowned playwright, Wole Soyinka has revealed who the attack was targeted.

Speaking during a condolence visit to Governor Akeredolu on Friday, Soyinka said the attack was not an accident but directed at him.

He said: “He (governor) was targeted and there is no question about that. It was not an accident and it passed a message to the rest of us. That is why I’m here. I want the governor to know that we have received the message

“We understand it and we came to sympathise with him that he was selected as a medium of that message“

Responding, Akeredolu expressed appreciation to Soyinka for the visit at the time of their grief, saying that the Catholic church attack has created fear in the heart of the residents.
