The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Force Criminal Investigations Department, Joseph Egbunike has slumped and died.
It was gathered that Egbunike reportedly slumped and died in his office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday.
He was rushed to the national hospital in Abuja where he later gave up the ghost.
Police officers have gathered at his official residence in Maitama in preparation for his burial, an official told Gazette.
“It is very tragic that he died after battling a protracted ailment that left his neck swollen for many years,” a police source said. “He was previously flown to London for treatment, but he did not recover well before returning to work.”
Egbunike who hails from Onitsha, Anambra State, headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations.
It was reported that the Egbunike-led panel had worked to give the embattled Abba Kyari a soft landing.
The late cop had recommended the demotion of Kyari instead of an outright dismissal.
Until being appointed DIG in late 2020, Egbunike had worked for several years as the head of the police finance department.
