Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime proved too strong for former champion Andy Murray on Thursday in New York, stopping the Briton’s Grand Slam rebound at the U.S. Open.
The 20-year-old fifteenth seed did as such with a windy 6-2 6-3 6-4 triumph in the second round of the hard court rivalry.
Drill Aliassime went in all out attack mode from the beginning and held onto control by making the 2012 U.S. Open victor, who has had two hip medical procedures, move all around the court.
Murray returned from two sets down to beat Yoshihito Nishioka in four hours and 39 minutes in his opening round, however it was distinctive for him this time around.
He didn’t have the stamina or endurance to content another rebound and endured four breaks of serves in the match.
Auger-Aliassime, who will meet either Briton Daniel Evans or Corentin Moutet of France next, did not face a single break-point.
He hit 52 winners, compared to the nine managed by the Scot, who was playing his first Slam since the 2019 Australian Open.
Speaking after the game Auger-Aliassime said: “It’s an amazing feeling.
I wish the fans were here. Life is funny because I came here in 2011 as a kid. I got tickets for a match. I watched Andy Murray and [Feliciano] Lopez play in the third round. It’s crazy that nine years later I’m here playing him and getting the win.”
