Gunmen Abduct 300 Zamfara Schoolgirls

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted hundreds of schoolgirls at Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

While some accounts said that at least a hundred students were abducted, others pegged the number of abductees at 300.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the school around 1 a.m., abducted the students, and whisked them to an undisclosed location.

A staff of the school who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that the gunmen came in Toyota Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.

The staff said that the gunmen operated on the school premises unchallenged for several hours.

“When they came into the school, we thought they were security personnel but to our utmost fear and dismay, they started putting the girls into Hilux vehicles and motorcycles then drove out of the school,” The Punch quoted the unnamed staff to have said.

They were said to have attacked some houses along the way before reaching the school.

“They attacked some houses along their way, and headed straight to the school,” TheCable quoted a resident, Abubakar Jangebe, to have said.

Malam Lawal Jangebe, a parent of one of the girls, said he nearly fainted when he learnt of the abduction of his daughter.

The Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mohammed Shehu promised to issue a statement on the incident shortly.
