BVN: Registration still on in Lagos

Five days after the expiration of the deadline for the registration of Bank Verification Number (BVN), banks in Lagos are still registering customers and synchronising their accounts.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some bank workers, however, said that the exercise was putting pressure on their routine operations.

Some of the banks visited in Lagos Metropolis had a good number of customers who called to either comply with the exercise or to synchronise their accounts with their BVN numbers.

An official of one of the banks visited, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told NAN that customers were still making frantic efforts to comply with the exercise.

She said that the bank was complying with the apex bank’s directive on BVN by ensuring that customers who had not registered were not able to withdraw from their accounts.

According to her, the only category of customers exempted from immediate compliance with the exercise are those living abroad.

She explained that the Central Bank of Nigeria had given customers in the Diaspora up to the end of January 2016 to comply or face the necessary sanctions.

Also, an official of another bank said that his branch was magnanimous to spend quality time with their customers who wished to comply with the exercise.

The official, who also spoke under condition of anonymity, also said that the exercise was exerting pressure on their routine operations.

NAN reports that there were fewer numbers of customers waiting to register unlike before the deadline for the exercise.

So far, more than 21 million bank customers have registered for the BVN according to official statistics.
