The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened fresh industrial action over what it described as the flawed and partial implementation of its December 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.
News360 Info reports that the union also decried the continued withholding of salaries and unpaid entitlements owed to its members.
The warning followed the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union held at the Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
Reading the communiqué to journalists in Abuja on Monday, ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, listed unresolved issues to include withheld three-and-a-half-month salaries, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls arising from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, unremitted third-party deductions, and arrears of the 25–35 per cent wage award.
Piwuna warned that the government’s handling of the issues was creating frustration among university lecturers.
He said, “The increasing frustration occasioned by the seeming government’s disinterestedness in the welfare of Nigerian academics is brewing a pent-up anger which could erupt into a new wave of industrial unrest if not addressed.”
The ASUU president appealed to the Federal and state governments to fully implement the agreement reached with the union.
Piwuna said the union remained open to dialogue with the government but warned that NEC would reconvene soon to review developments and decide on the next line of action.
“The union appeals to all genuine patriots, well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of Nigeria to prevail on State and Federal governments to fully implement the new Agreement and resolve other outstanding issues in the interest of parents, students and the nation at large.
“Our union’s doors remain open for working with the government to realise all our demands.
“At the same time, NEC directs an emergency meeting of NEC to be called in the next few weeks to review the situation and take appropriate action as may be necessary,” he added.
