Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed as a result of a fire that ravaged a residential building in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident occurred at No. 39, Alarape Compound, opposite the new Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Yemetu, Ibadan.
The fire was caused by a cooking gas cylinder that was left unattended, which ignited nearby combustibles and set the building ablaze.
It was learnt that the fire affected several parts of the ancient building. Our correspondent also gathered that properties worth millions of naira were lost in the inferno.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident.
Akinwande, in a statement made available on Wednesday, said that no casualties were recorded. He added that the fire was caused by a cooking gas cylinder that was left unattended, which ignited nearby combustibles and set the building on fire.
He further stated that the operation was carried out in conjunction with men of the Federal Fire Service.
He said: “On getting there, we met the upper floor of the ancient residential building engulfed by fire. Firemen promptly launched a coordinated attack on the blaze and restricted the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.
“The operation was jointly carried out with officers from the Federal Fire Service Ibadan Command, and properties worth millions of naira were saved by the fire service.
“No casualties were recorded, and the root cause of the fire incident was a cooking gas cylinder left unattended, which ignited nearby combustibles and set the building ablaze.”
