Police debunk videos of planned attacks on Ekiti tertiary institutions

The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed claims that bandits are planning to attack some higher institutions in the state, describing a viral video making the rounds as fake and created using artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said the Command became aware of a video on social media in which a man, allegedly a bandit, threatened to attack Ekiti State University and Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BUOESTI).

According to him, the video and the accompanying rumours caused fear in different parts of the state. However, investigations by the Command revealed that the video was not real but an AI-generated fabrication intended to cause panic.

“After thorough investigation, it was discovered that neither the video nor the rumour of any planned attack in the state is true,” Abutu said.

He added that, despite the fake nature of the video, the command has deployed adequate security personnel across the state, especially to border towns, schools, worship centres, public and private facilities, and other identified black spots to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Also reacting, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Joseph Eribo, urged residents to ignore the fake news and continue their activities without fear.
