Gunmen have reportedly killed an Europe- based man simply identified as Derrick in Benin City, Edo State.
Reports that the Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident to newsmen on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 in Benin City.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSP Moses Yamu said investigation is on going to arrest the perpetrators.
Gathered that the unfortunate incident happened at the weekend in Igun street in Benin City.
The armed men were reported to have shot the deceased to death after he allegedly resisted the attempt to steal his gold necklace valued at N50 million.
It was learnt that the deceased who had just returned from a European country met his untimely death when he went to the Igun street to buy spare-parts for his vehicle.
It was also gathered that the gunmen who emerged from nowhere accosted him and shot him to death.
The gunmen were said to have taken his jewelry and fled the scene.
An eyewitness added that the gunmen may have trailed the victim to the street where he went to buy spare parts.
“I suspect the victim was trailed to Igun, because he was checking for motor spare-parts to buy when the gunmen emerged and demanded for his lumbar gold necklace.
”But the victim asked why he should handover the necklace.
”His reply may have also angered the gunmen as one of them reached out for a Pump Action gun in their Lexus SUV and shot the victim twice on his leg.
“The gang thereafter took off his jewellery and fled the scene.
”Though sympathisers later rushed the victim to the hospital for medical attention, he was pronounced dead on arrival,”he said.
