NLC Issues Threat To Lawmakers, Governors On Minimum Wage

A legislative attempt by members of the National Assembly to move the wage determination from the Exclusive legislative list to the Concurrent list has drawn the vehement criticism of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Speaking at the National Labor Conference’s 2024 Rain School in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Ajaero expressed worries that this change would let state governors set their own minimum pay, thus weakening federal wage standards.

Ajaero issued a warning, stating that the proposed change may lead to serious labor unrest and possibly even a one-month nationwide travel ban.
