UNIJOS Suspends Exams Over Rising Tension After Plateau Attack

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has suspended all examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday following heightened tension in Jos after a deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The institution’s management also advised students and staff to remain indoors and exercise caution as security concerns escalate in the area.

News360 Info reported earlier that residents of Angwan Rukuba were thrown into panic on Sunday evening after suspected gunmen launched a deadly attack on Gari Ya Waye community, leaving many people feared dead and several others injured.

The attack, which occurred at about 7:50 pm, saw heavily armed assailants storm the community and open fire on residents.

Eyewitnesses said the sound of gunshots sent residents fleeing in different directions as the attackers unleashed terror on the area.

Several people were killed in the attack, while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In the aftermath of the killings, angry youths reportedly took to the streets, blocking major roads and attacking motorcycle riders and passengers in the area.

The development further heightened tension across parts of Jos, raising fears of a possible breakdown of law and order.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, said the decision to suspend examinations was necessitated by the deteriorating security situation.

“In view of the late evening fatal attacks by unknown gunmen on residents of Angwan Rukuba (an area that hosts many staff and students of the University), and the consequential tensions it has generated in and around the area and environs.

“The Vice Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled to hold on Monday 30th, and Tuesday 31st March, 2026 are postponed, and will be rescheduled accordingly,” the statement read.

The university further urged members of its community to prioritise their safety and remain alert at all times.

“That members of the University community be advised to be very vigilant and extra careful with their movements (on and off campus) with immediate effect.

“For emphasis, members are strongly advised to avoid coming out very early in the morning, and should report immediately any sign or shadow of breach of the public peace to the University Security Division,” the statement added.

The management assured that it is working closely with security agencies to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff.

“University Management is actively liaising with the relevant security agencies and monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the lives of members of the University community. Further relevant updates will be communicated in due course,” it stated.

The suspension of examinations underscores the growing insecurity in parts of Plateau State, particularly in Jos North, where recent attacks have triggered fear and uncertainty among residents.

Authorities continue to urge calm as efforts are intensified to restore peace and prevent further violence.
