Golf legend Tiger Woods has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after a crash in Jupiter Island, Florida.
John Budensiek of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office told reporters on Friday night, March 27, the incident happened shortly after 2pm local time earlier today.
Woods was driving a Land Rover when the vehicle attempted to overtake a truck “at high speeds” before swerving and rolling onto its side, authorities said.
Budensiek said Woods showed “signs of impairment” at the scene. A breathalyser test returned negative, but the golfer refused a urinalysis.
“When it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, and so he has been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test,” the sheriff said.
Under Florida law, Tiger Woods must remain in jail for at least eight hours before being released on bond. The offences are misdemeanours.
Police said Woods was alone in the vehicle and no injuries were reported. The truck he struck was towing a pressure cleaner trailer. The driver tried to move aside but did not have enough room.
Officers said Woods “crawled out of the passenger door” before police arrived. It remains unclear whether he was wearing a seat belt.
“He was lethargic on scene but that we believe was because of what he was intoxicated on,” Budensiek said.
The sheriff warned the crash could easily have been more serious.
“Had there been someone moving in the opposite direction, we would not be having a conversation saying there was no injuries. This could’ve been a lot worse,” he added.
News360 Info reports that the arrest marks the fourth time since 2009 Woods has been involved in a dangerous vehicle incident and the second time since 2017 he has faced a DUI charge.
