Colombian military plane carrying troops crashes after takeoff

A Colombian Air Force plane crashed on Monday near the town of Puerto Leguízamo, in Putumayo province, close to the border with Peru.

The C-130 Hercules, used for transporting troops, went down shortly after departure while carrying scores of members of Colombia’s Fuerza Pública.

Early reports say the number of individuals on board could be up to 100 military personnel, as two full platoons were being transported.

Videos on social media show the burning plane. Security personnel and emergency responders have arrived at the scene located in the south of the country.

Colombia’s defence minister, Pedro Sánchez, said the aircraft “suffered a tragic accident” while taking off and confirmed it was conveying members of the Public Force.

In a statement on X, Sánchez announced the presence of military units at the site, adding that the number of victims and the causes of the crash have not yet been determined.

“All care protocols for the victims and their families have been activated, as well as the corresponding investigation,” the minister noted.

Sánchez expressed condolences to the families of those affected and advised the public to avoid speculation until official information is available.
