National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has defended the ruling party’s silence on the new amendments to the Electoral Act, unlike the opposition parties, which have been screaming about it.
News360 Info reports that Morka, during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’, said the APC is not making noise because it respects the authority of the National Assembly.
According to Morka, the law is a product of the collective efforts of Nigerian lawmakers, stressing that the APC is also affected by the Act’s mandatory e-register for parties.
Morkar admitted that APC is the majority in the National Assembly, but the party has no reason to intimidate anyone.
He said, “The APC isn’t the National Assembly. We’re also affected by the Act’s mandatory e-register for parties. I don’t know where the opposition thinks we have an advantage or are skewing the process in our favour.
“The National Assembly is an agglomeration of all of the elected representatives of the people across political parties.
“Yes, we are in a majority, no doubt. But that does not mean that the Act of the National Assembly must then necessarily be ascribed or become ascribable to the APC.
“That will be a flaw which is unfair and actually even nonsensical. Now I don’t know what Kenneth Okonkwo was talking about, but we have the Electoral Act that was promulgated and signed by the president of the Federal Republic, and today is now law.”
