FUD Senate Expels 20 Students, Rusticates 15 Over Exam Malpractice

The Senate of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State has approved the expulsion of 20 students and the rustication of 15 others over their involvement in examination malpractice. The decision followed recommendations submitted by the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct for the Second Semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Dutse by the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya-Bello.

According to the statement, the disciplinary measures were approved after the Senate reviewed the report of the committee that investigated cases of examination misconduct within the institution.

The statement, signed by the Director of Academic Affairs, Nora Dannatta, noted that the affected students were drawn from different faculties and departments across the university.

“The decision was in accordance with the categories of offences and punishments governing both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and those affected were drawn from various faculties and departments of the university,” the statement read in part.

Naija News reports that apart from the expulsions and rustications, the Senate also reviewed other cases brought before it and reached varying decisions.

The university disclosed that two students who were earlier accused were cleared after investigations found them not culpable.

In addition, three other students were issued written warnings. The development comes amid an increase in disciplinary measures taken by Nigerian universities against students found guilty of academic and non-academic misconduct.

Recently, the University of Abuja expelled 28 students for offences including cult-related activities, examination malpractice, drug possession and threats to life.

According to the institution, “the affected students were found culpable of serious misconduct, including assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university portal for admission, as well as possession and use of hard drugs.”
