Experts warn against misuse of social media

Speakers at the 40th birthday media lecture of Oluwatosin Adesile have stressed the need for caution in social media posts, comments and shared content to avoid what they described as digital identity crises.

The virtual event, organised by the Tosin Adesile Footprint on Monday, was themed “Selfless vs Selfish Use of Social Media in Today’s Chaotic World.”

The guest speaker, Dr. Ademola Olajire, Director of Media and Communication at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), advised Nigerians to embrace integrity and discipline in building credible online brands.

Speaking on the theme, Dr. Olajire examined what he described as the dual nature of social media, contrasting “selfish” and “selfless” usage.

“Digital platforms can open doors to opportunities, but they can also permanently damage reputations when misused,” he said. “Integrity and discipline remain essential in building a credible online brand.”

He noted that while social media can spread misinformation and amplify personal agendas, it can also serve as a powerful tool for crisis response, community support, advocacy and educational development when used responsibly.

Referencing initiatives such as the Mission X campaign in support of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Dr. Olajire said coordinated digital efforts could inspire national pride and mobilise constructive action.

In his remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Lanre Laoshe, a former federal lawmaker and insurance expert, described social media as “a double-edged sword” with immense power.

“As a nation, we must reflect deeply,” Laoshe said. “When we constantly project negativity, insult our leaders without constructive engagement, exaggerate our problems, or spread unverified claims, we collectively contribute to shaping how the world perceives us. A country’s image is not built by the government alone; it is built daily by its citizens — through their words, actions and digital footprints.”

He further highlighted the personal implications of online conduct.

“On a personal level, social media is no longer a casual space. Employers, scholarship boards and embassies now review applicants’ online presence.

Your posts, comments and shared content form part of your digital identity. What you post today can resurface years later. Your social media history can either open doors or close them permanently,” he said.

The celebration also featured heartfelt tributes from colleagues, loved ones, and past and present students, who praised Dr. Adesile’s leadership, generosity and commitment to personal and professional growth. Many commended his consistent use of social media to uplift others and promote meaningful conversations.
