NAPTIP Frees 184 Trafficking Victims in Major Plateau Rescue Operation

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued 184 individuals from human trafficking in Plateau State, including three pregnant women.

Anne Felix, the acting Head of Counselling and Rehabilitation for NAPTIP in Plateau, disclosed this in Jos on Tuesday.

She spoke on the sidelines of a state meeting on women, peace, and security.

According to her, the agency conducted several operations in recent months to clamp down on trafficking activities in the state.

“From the last quarter until now, we have conducted raids to tackle human trafficking,” Felix said.

She explained that officials raided multiple locations in Jos, resulting in the rescue of 184 victims.

Those freed included men, women, teenagers, and minors under the age of 18, with three of the rescued individuals found to be pregnant.

Felix noted that five of the victims are currently receiving care and rehabilitation at NAPTIP centres. She added that the agency has also taken action against those responsible for the crimes.

“In December, we secured convictions against some traffickers. They are now serving jail terms,” she stated.

She observed that some cases were handled in collaboration with authorities in other states, particularly where mediation and further investigations were necessary.

Felix further revealed that in January, NAPTIP intercepted another group of victims being transported to Akure for trafficking. The agency successfully reunited them with their families, while the suspects involved are facing prosecution.

She emphasised that NAPTIP remains committed to ending human trafficking in Plateau State and across Nigeria, adding that survivors are being supported with skills and empowerment programmes to help them rebuild their lives.
