Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has lauded the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, over the reported cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home order across the South-East states.
Igboho said the development would reinvigorate socio-economic activities in the region and create an enabling environment for small and medium-scale enterprises to thrive.
Kanu, who is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence for terrorism at the Sokoto Correctional Facility, was said to have ordered the cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home directive, which had been in place for about five years.
In a statement issued by his counsel, Mr Pelumi Olanjengbesi, Igboho described Kanu’s decision as thoughtful and timely.
The statement read in part: “I want to urge the IPOB leader to vigorously explore dialogue and mediation with the Federal Government to break the deadlock in his current ordeal.”
Igboho noted that while self-determination remains a fundamental right, dialogue remains a viable path toward peace and stability.
“While it is the fundamental right of Mazi Kanu to pursue self-determination, I hold the view that the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is predisposed to negotiation and mutual understanding for the peace, shared prosperity, security and the deserved respect that the South-East commands,” he said.
The activist also appealed to those allegedly benefiting from unrest in the region to desist in the interest of peace and development.
“It is equally imperative to appeal to all those who make profits from the desecration and despoliation of the South-East through violence to desist from such acts in the interest of peace and economic prosperity of the region and the nation,” he added.
