US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200 per cent tariffs on French wine and champagne following France’s reported reluctance to join his proposed ‘Board of Peace.’
The president shared the threat and a private exchange with French President Emmanuel Macron on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Monday.
The spat escalated after French officials reportedly mocked US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s explanation of Trump’s focus on Greenland, the Danish Arctic territory.
“I’ll put a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagne. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” Trump said, referring to Macron.
The so-called Board of Peace was initially proposed to oversee reconstruction in Gaza, though its charter does not explicitly limit its activities to the Palestinian territory.
Trump also shared a private message from Macron, in which the French president noted that while they agree on key issues involving Iran and Syria, he did not understand Trump’s interest in Greenland.
Macron invited Trump to meet alongside other G7 leaders at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, suggesting that representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia could also participate.
