Gaza aid: US slams UN General Assembly resolution on Israel

The United States has criticized the United Nations General Assembly for “yet again” passing an “unserious and biased resolution” regarding Gaza, saying it demonstrates “the continued prevalence of anti-Israel bias over substantive diplomacy.”

The UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution demanding that Israel allows lifesaving humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip, endorsing the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.

The vote of 139 in favour to 12 against with 19 abstentions aligned with the ICJ opinion issued on October 22. The United Nations court declared Israel has an obligation to ensure the basic needs of the Gaza people are met.

The panel of 11 judges asked Israel to support the relief efforts provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, other international organizations and third States.

ICJ President Yuji Iwasawa then stated that Jerusalem had not “substantiated its allegations that a significant part of UNRWA’s employees are members of Hamas … or other terrorist factions.”

Slamming UNGA’s action, the U.S. said following President Donald Trump’s plan, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2803 to end the war in Gaza and create a peaceful horizon for Gazans, Israelis, and the Middle East in general.

Since that time, according to the Department of State, aid has flooded into Gaza and the United States has, alongside partners, sustained the momentum towards a lasting peace.

“Despite this, the UN General Assembly chose to advance a divisive, politicized resolution based on false allegations and which distracts from real-life diplomacy,” the spokesperson, Thomas Pigott, noted.

The U.S. government stressed that requesting Israel to implement “the misguided and incorrect conclusions of a non-binding advisory opinion” issued by the ICJ “makes a mockery of international law.”

Arguing that advisory opinions are not a basis for legislation, Washington says the notion that any nation could be compelled by the UN General Assembly to work with any organization is a gross infringement on sovereignty.

The United States further opposes “every effort to empower UNRWA, a Hamas subsidiary that was complicit in the atrocities of October 7 … It is unaccountable, corrupt, and will have absolutely no place in Gaza.”

The U.S. insists on implementing the UNSC Resolution 2803 and pursuing President Trump’s vision which ensures Gaza “is no longer a launchpad for terrorism to threaten Israel, and where people can determine their own destiny, free from the rule of terrorists.”
