Not in our portfolio — Dangote Refinery reacts as Europe shuns diesel over substandard specs

Dangote Refinery has reacted to allegations by European petroleum products buyers and importers that its diesel failed to meets winter specifications and has sulfur levels above tolerance.

This comes amid a report published by Argus Media and also available on Oilprice.com that suggested that Europe buyers and importers shunned Dangote Diesel because it does not meet winter specs.

“Dangote can’t supply winter diesel, at present, to the colder regions [of Europe],” the media reported, quoting a Nigerian source.

The report had generated concerns in the global energy sector in the last 24 hours.

But, reacting to the development, the spokesperson of Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, said the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery does not produce winter diesel.

“Winter Diesel is not in our portfolio. “We don’t need winter spec. We are a tropical country,” Chiejina said.

Meanwhile, in a statement in 2024, Dangote Group, in a statement quoting Devakumar Edwin, the Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, had said that Dangote Refinery exported 90 percent of its jet fuel and diesel to Europe.
