The 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, have been rescued, security sources told TheCable on Tuesday.

News360 Info recalls that armed men took the students during a night attack that drew nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about school safety in the North-West.

The assailants were said to have stormed the school at about 5:52 am, shooting sporadically as students prepared for the day’s routine.

The gunmen overpowered the school’s security, whisking away several girls before fleeing into nearby bushes.

The Kebbi State Police Command also confirmed the deadly attack on the school, where bandits killed the Vice Principal and abducted 25 students in the early hours of Monday.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, on Monday, verified the attack, revealing that the armed men breached the school’s perimeter before striking.

The development saw President Bola Tinubu ask Vice President, Kashim Shettima, to visit Kebbi State on Wednesday to sympathise with the state government.

He expressed sadness over the abduction of the Kebbi State schoolgirls, assuring the government, parents and guardians that the federal government will ensure their quick release.

Details of the efforts that led to the rescue of the students are still sketchy at the time of this report, but an official announcement is expected tonight.
