Accident claims four lives, others injured in Gombe

A lone crash claimed four lives and injured several others with different degrees of injuries along the ever-busy Cham-Numan road, in the Balanga LGA axis of Gombe State.

The Gombe State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), through the Sector Commander, CC Samson Kaura, confirmed the crash on Sunday and stated that among the victims was a child.

Due to loss of control by the driver as a result of violating speed limit, Kaura said that the crash occurred around 2 am.

He further explained that the incident happened when a Toyota Hummer bus from Toro LGA in Bauchi State, travelling to Adamawa State, carrying mostly children, lost control along Cham-Numan Road, resulting in the crash.

According to the Sector Commander, the vehicle was moving above the recommended speed limit, and it resulted in loss of control and eventual crash.

He lamented, “This is unfortunate because the bus was overloaded as the children were lapping one another, which increased the number of persons expected for such a vehicle.”

He also observed that the vehicle was conveying 41 persons, mostly children, as against 18 passengers.

He cautioned drivers and other road users against night travel, saying that though it is their constitutional right to travel anytime, they must know that it is riskier travelling at night than during the day.

Kaura alleged that those who want to escape road enforcement officers decided to travel at night, stressing that they must desist from those acts.
