Security operatives arrest gunrunner with weapons hidden in dried fish shipment in Zamfara

Security operatives in Zamfara State have apprehended a suspected arms trafficker in Gusau trying to transport a sizeable consignment of arms, which included rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), AK-47 rifles and other ammunition, to the Dansadau axis.

Reliable security sources told Zagazola Makama that the arms trafficker was arrested on Sunday, as part of an investigation, after credible intelligence indicated that arms trafficking had been detected in the state capital.

The sources claimed that the arms trafficker concealed the arms in a consignment of dried fish to avoid detection. Preliminary investigation also revealed that the arms originated from the Lake Chad region, a notorious route used for arms trafficking across the border by terrorist and bandits network across the North-West region.

“The suspect was nabbed while trying to transport the deadly shipment to Dansadau, one of the areas recently hit by bandit attacks,” a source confirmed.

Security agencies have since intensified efforts to trace the source of the weapons and identify other members of the smuggling network.
