Lawyer Alleges Police Assault, Says Sowore’s Rearrest Was Premeditated

Human rights lawyer, Temitope Temokun, has recounted how more than ten police officers allegedly whisked away activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, from the premises of the Kuje Magistrate Court on Friday.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Sunday, Temokun described the incident as “unnecessary and premeditated,” saying those who tried to film the arrest were attacked.

Temokun, who narrated the event, said, “Those who tried to capture the scene were brutalised by the officers. I was also assaulted and sustained injuries.”

The lawyer explained that the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and other defendants arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest had met their bail conditions within 30 minutes of the magistrate’s ruling.

Temokun alleged, “Yet officers stormed the court premises and bundled him into a vehicle.”

News360 Info reports that the court had earlier granted Sowore bail of ₦500,000 with two sureties.

Temokun further criticised the police for allegedly attempting to move Sowore to Kuje Prison without proper authorisation.

The human rights lawyer added, “They tried to masquerade the situation and patch it up, but the Kuje authorities initially rejected him.”

Despite meeting bail conditions, Sowore was rearrested and is now expected to face arraignment on Monday, October 27, 2025.
