University Of Ibadan Lecturers Join Nationwide ASUU Strike

Academic life at the University of Ibadan came to a standstill on Monday as lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) fully complied with the union’s two-week nationwide warning strike.

Lecture halls, offices, and major administrative buildings across the campus were under lock and key, while the usually busy environment wore an unusually quiet look. The number of students and vehicles moving around dropped sharply as the directive from ASUU’s national body took effect.

Confirming the development, the chairman of ASUU, UI chapter, Dr Adefemi Afolabi, said the strike began at midnight on Sunday and would continue until further instructions are received from the national secretariat.

“There is full compliance with the directive from our national body. The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” Afolabi said.

He added that a monitoring team had been dispatched across faculties and departments to ensure strict adherence. “No academic or related activity is taking place on the campus at the moment,” he stressed.

Students had been notified in advance of the industrial action and were largely seen staying indoors, as lectures, seminars, and administrative duties were suspended.

News360 Info reports that the strike followed Sunday’s announcement by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, at a press briefing in Abuja. He said the two-week total and comprehensive warning strike became necessary following the Federal Government’s failure to meet the union’s long-standing demands.

“It goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025,” Piwuna said.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th October, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting.”
